Internet at a chalet or holiday home: what really works

katalogisp.cz editors · 11/8/2026

Cottages and holiday homes are typically located outside the routes where it is cost-effective to install a fibre or cable connection for a single address point. However, this does not mean that internet cannot be provided there at all; it simply means that a different approach than in towns must be sought. In addition, the fact that recreational properties are often not used year-round also plays a role and can be reflected in the choice of tariff.

What is really offered at the cottage

Wireless connection from a local provider (FWA)

In a number of municipalities and recreational areas, smaller local internet providers operate by transmitting signals from transmitters on hills, towers or high masts to antennas on roofs or façades. This technology (known as FWA - fixed wireless access) is often the only realistic fixed solution in similar locations and tends to be faster and more stable than expected, especially if there is a direct line of sight between the transmitter and the antenna. It is precisely these smaller providers that large comparison sites usually do not show at all, because they do not pay for ranking positions. In the catalogue on katalogisp.cz, they appear alongside national operators because we draw data directly from the records of the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ).

Mobile internet and 5G

Where mobile network coverage is adequate, a mobile router or a SIM card for a WiFi router with a SIM slot can also serve as an internet connection. Quality varies significantly depending on the distance from the transmitter and how many people are using the network in the area - at weekends in recreational areas there are noticeably more users at once.

Satellite internet

Satellite connections (today mainly low-orbit systems) work practically anywhere with an unobstructed view of the sky, making them a solution for locations where neither the wireless signal of a local ISP nor the mobile network reaches. The article Starlink in the Czech Republic: when it makes sense and when it does not deals in more detail with satellite connections and when they are or are not sensible.

Seasonal and flexible tariffs

A chalet is often used only part of the year, and a number of internet providers, mainly smaller local ones, respond with more flexible conditions than you are used to from urban tariffs: the option to suspend a tariff for a few months, shorter notice periods or prepaid data packages for mobile solutions. This is a topic worth asking the provider directly about, national price lists often do not account for this, but individual agreements are common with smaller companies.

How to find out what is available at a specific chalet

Availability at a chalet is verified in the same way as anywhere else by entering the exact address or cadastral location into the search on the main page. The result will show all internet providers recorded by the Czech Telecommunication Office (ČTÚ) for that location, including technology and a link to their website. If the search finds no offers, providers in the surrounding area will also be displayed; this is useful for recreational areas because the same local ISP often covers an entire settlement or valley even if there is no record for the individual address point. An overview of all providers by region is also available at katalogisp.cz.

Combination of solutions as a backup

For a cottage used only occasionally or where connectivity is important for security (cameras, alarm systems), it may be worth considering a backup solution, for example, combining local wireless as the primary connection with a mobile SIM card in reserve in case of an outage. For cottages occupied year-round where working from home is also required, a similar backup is a sensible investment, because repairing a fault with a smaller local internet provider in a remote area may take longer than in a city.

What to watch out for

  • The "up to" speed for wireless technologies actually depends on weather conditions and visibility to the transmitter, see more in the article Internet speed: what do the numbers in offers mean.
  • Data limits for mobile and satellite tariffs - these can be used up faster than expected when streaming video.
  • Antenna installation - for FWA solutions, a direct line of sight to the transmitter is usually required, which can only be verified by a technician on site.

Summary

At a chalet or holiday home, the best solution is sought differently than in a city: instead of asking "who has the fastest fibre", it is more about "who operates here at all and under what conditions". Local wireless internet providers are often a surprisingly good choice precisely in places where major operators do not reach.
